The Music Project
I was recently given a project.
Choose 10 songs that mean a lot to you, explain why in 5 sentences or less, and quote your favorite lyrics from them.
This is what I came up with:
1. When We Die - Bowling for Soup
“And I know that we're gonna be fine, and the tattooed mistakes are gonna fade over time.”
I spent a majority of my adolescence thinking that nothing was going to work out, that my life was deemed to fail before I got anything out of it. When I first heard this song a few weeks before my senior year, it really spoke to me. I truly do feel like we’re gonna be fine, and it’s really comforting to hear that even tattooed mistakes will fade. As long as we live, time passes by.
2. Look At Me Now - Charlie Puth
“This is for everybody who's always put me down. I hope you open up your eyes and take a good look at me now.”
This song is my all time favorite pump up song. I really love Charlie Puth and I have for a really long time, but this is by far my favorite. Especially since all of his lyrics were 100% true and everything about it is awesome. For everyone who always put me down, take a good look at me now.
3. Right For Me - Dave Days
“These memories come down crashing, making sense of my actions. I was wrong, but now I know you were right for me.”
The first time I heard this song, I knew I would love it forever because I realized how much Dave had grown up since his last album. This song also reminded me of my then-boyfriend and was the final push I needed to break up with him. I can’t explain it, but there was something about that song that made me feel like I wouldn’t regret letting him go, so I did, and I haven’t regretted it at all.
4. The Middle - Jimmy Eat World
“It just takes some time. Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride. Everything will be just fine, everything will be all right.”
I’m sure a majority of people know that this is my song. It never fails to make me feel alright because it literally sounds like it was written for me. Little girl in the middle? I’m the middle kid between two boys. It just takes some time, but everything will be just fine and alright.
5. Classic - MKTO
“I'm a pick you up in a Cadillac like a gentleman bringin' glamour back.”
Sofia, Emily and I listened to this song on full blast one day in Mr. Lively’s room after hearing it in a “get ready with me” prom video. Not more than two minutes later, we were writing lyrics on the whiteboard, trying to come up with prom themes. We narrowed it down to “Timeless” and “Bringing Glamour Back”, so we used both (Timeless: Bringing Glamour Back). This song never fails to remind me of my entire junior year and more importantly, all of our prom adventures. This song will always be very special to me.
6. Fly With Me - Jonas Brothers
“If it's you and me forever of if it's you and me right now, that'd be alright.”
This song is, and forever will be, my all-time favorite Jonas Brothers song. Every single lyric in this song is absolutely beautiful and the fact that Nick sings most of it just adds to it’s magic. And I especially love the lyric that I noted, because I really, really believe that with everyone in my life. People come and go, but if someone leaves, more people will come. Everything is alright.
7. If These Sheets Were the States - All Time Low
“If these sheets were the states, and you were miles away, I'd fold them end over end to bring you closer to me.”
I have a journal entry on some of my Advanced Math Topics notes that talks a lot about how some people are more prone to have “long distance relationships”. Basically, I’m good at maintaining friendships when people move away or creating relationships with people who don’t live near me. From Jacob (long story) to Audrey and Elle (best friends to this day), Carly (@TheGirlWithWifi), to Curtis (LOL), my 250 YCS friends, to the infamous Commando Brando. This song embodies how I feel when I miss people (not to much the pressed up against me part though). Having friends in other states has always been my normal.
8. Stay Together for the Kids - blink-182
“If a stupid poem could fix this home I'd read it every day.”
I’ll love blink-182 forever, and even though this isn’t always a song I gravitate to like some of their others, I love what this song stands for. It’s about living in an unhappy home and how deeply it hurts. My parents aren’t divorced, but no home is 100% perfect.
9. Welcome To My Life - Simple Plan
“To be on the edge of breaking down and no one’s there to save you. No you don't know what it’s like, welcome to my life.”
Someone pointed out to me recently that I say “welcome to my life” a lot. I don’t always notice when I say it, but usually I think about this song and how I’m just an angsty teen, ya feel? I don’t really agree with the whole “you don’t know what it’s like” part, but this song has always been pretty relatable. It has a very special place in my heart.
10. Legendary - The Summer Set
“When I was a kid, I’d fly around and Peter would mention, ‘Don’t be afraid to die, 'cause to die would be an awfully big adventure’.”
Now that I’m watching How I Met Your Mother, this song makes so much more sense. I feel the insecurity that Brian sings about and I relate to the emptiness that is trying to find your yellow umbrella, but still having faith and believing. Though this isn’t my favorite The Summer Set song, it’s up there because of the unmatchable lyrics. Especially about Peter Pan.
